I was out at Sandusky Speedway in Sandusky, OH yesterday for their "Wild Bill" Hangover race. They run this race every year in whatever weather shows up for New Year's Day. This was their 34th year running the event, and I think they had about 20-25 cars show up.

The picture I shared above is from the "Champagne Stock" open rule class. Pretty much could run anything you wanted to bring to the track. We had three late models with sideboards (one of them seen above), plus a couple late models with sprint car wings. They all ran dirt racing tires. The "Moonshine Stock" class are pretty much all the Sportsman/Street/Pure Stock type cars you'd see at your local asphalt or dirt track. The third division was "Whiskey Stock" and featured FWD cars on DOT approved tires.

With no visible walls/billboards/grandstands to act as a barrier that car must be hilarious to drive on a windy day.

Yea there was definitely wind. I thing my weather app said that it was between 15-25 MPH. Was only able to get the thing slideways a few times. Also the wet asphalt didn't break traction enough. Unfortunately the track put salt down before the heats and features. But only in the middle of the track, in the turns.

Purpose of the "sideboards"?

Typically they allow the car to go much much faster than, say, a typical dirt late model. It's not so much downforce...it just keeps the car stable while sliding at a faster rate of speed. A friend of mine told me that a late model with sideboards was able to run about a 10 second lap at his track when 410 sprints were in the 12-13 second bracket.

You only see these things at "open rule" races since they are usually banned.

They were the fastest there, but I don't think they ran as fast as they hoped. They couldn't get the car to set in a slide and stay on the throttle.

An enterprising racer could also sell ad space on them. :)

Thanks for sharing! I've never seen racing like that before. I like the bodywork and aerodynamics. Some real nice pics too. Very cool.
